How To Get Started Growing Microgreens?

how to get started growing microgreens

I remember very well a few years ago, my first contact with microgreens was when I was searching for business oportunities and found two lovely Slovenian couples, living in New Zealand. They were running a home based microgreen business. I still can feel the same excitment looking back on that day. I felt like I could fly, dive deep into the ocean, jump from the highest building….the feeling was really extraordinary. I knew right away, that I found my calling and my first actuall business. Microgreens to me at the time were eye catching , simply beautiful  and everyone could easly fall in love with them.

Not just home growers, who love dealing with microgreens, but also fine restaurants, restaurants with an emphasis of local food and also departments in a specialty grocery store (health and organic stores mostly). They all seemed to need microgreens. Nowdays they are a little bit more known around the world, so that the market is familiar with the term ‘microgreens’. This could be your advantage, if you decide to start a business in the microgreens niche. So how to get started growing microgreens?

Home growing or even starting business?

Six years ago, we bought one rack and specialty lights for it. We occupied free room that we, back then, had in our apartment to test different varieties. I also called my friend, who was a photographer in her free time and asked her to take pictures of our grown microgreens. When I look at it now, I know, that they weren’t perfect, but the most important thing was that we felt great all the way growing our little microgreens. And this was definetelly the situation with us. Excitement was always present. Here’s a picture of our first microgreens.

Our microgreens from the start.

After growing and testing flavors of different microgreens, we also wanted our family to try them and we wanted them to tell  us what they thought, feel & taste. And they also enjoyed eating fresh plants – radish was the big winner. They just couldn’t process, how such small plants had such an intense flavor of mature radishes. They were looking for  the actual ‘fruit’ of a mature radish, but there wasn’t any. All what they got were these beautiful small plants, called microgreens. But I also recall that, this ‘fruit finding’ of mature radish’ was what we experienced several times when exposing and presenting our microgreens at the local farmers market in Ljubljana (the capital city of Slovenia). It was such a fun time 😉

Perhaps you will fall also into microgreens and perhaps even make some money from them. But first things first.

Are you also asking yourself, if these little beauties are for you?

Try them. Try to grow some of the varieties first at home; in your basement, kitchen, or wherever you have space and some daylight. Test different growing mediums, so that you’ll understand the difference and why you will choose, what will you choose 😉 That being said, we tested and tested and  having the right soil was everything. But there are perhaps some other benefits, why people choose other mediums.

If you want to add more nutrients, more taste, more diversity into your daily meals, then microgreens are definetely for you. With microgreens, you will experience new tastes and new ways of nutrition for yourself. But the best part for us was always the ‘growing part’. I remember, when my mom said to me, that not even a cactus will grow in my apartment. She said I was that bad at gardening and I missed that ‘green thumb’. I proved her wrong. I’ve been dealing with microgreens for five years now, and I am still super excited everyday  that I can spend with these little beauties.

But what if….?

As the good old saying goes, If you never try, you will  never know. So basically you just need to take action and start to grow some microgreens for you and your family. I promise you’ll get a lot of calls from them from hereon out to ask you if you perhaps have some excess microgreens at home. And the feeling how proud you will be, to provide living plants to people you love. And I guarantee you, that you will never be the same again. You will want to gain more knowledge on the microgreen topic, how to grow different varieties etc.. Which ones are the tasty ones, which are the most eye catching,….Perhaps you will also ask yourself at some point, are microgreens profitable enough to sell? Well, let me answer to this question in another post. Or you can jump directly in our online course, where we have included all our knowledge and we are very proud, that you also can now access to all that knowledge. So click here.
